The built-in `sanity()` adapter runs a GROQ query and maps each document's fields to frontmatter and its Portable Text body to Markdown. The adapter declares `@sanity/client` as its runtime dependency — an optional peer, so install it only if you use this source.

A read token for a private dataset comes from the `SANITY_TOKEN` environment variable, which the adapter declares. Custom Portable Text block types map to Blume components through the engine's `serializers` option, available when you construct `sanitySource` directly and pass it to [`custom()`](/docs/content/sources/custom). Setting `serializers` writes the source's pages as MDX, so a component or directive a serializer returns renders.
